Sermon notes on Luke Chapter 1: 1-25 by David Magowan.

Luke 1:1-25

In these verses we are introduced to 3 men - a physician (Luke), a priest (Zechariah), and a prophet (John).

Luke is a man of diligence (1-4). He's produced an orderly account of the events of the life of Jesus that Theophilus (and you) might have certainty about them.

Zechariah is a man of disbelief (18-20). He has lost sight of the greatness of the God he worships. He doesn't expect God to answer his prayers and do the impossible. Do we? Gabriel's answer to Zechariah's question (18), "How can I be sure?", is that God has spoken and what God says is true and will happen. How can we be sure Jesus Christ will come again? Because God has spoken. Do Zechariah & Elizabeth describe you - religiously faithful but barren and unexpectant?

John is a man of distinction (14-17). He would exercise an important ministry of preparation in advance of the coming of the Lord. He would proclaim Christ's coming boldly and fearlessly, calling people to repentance. We too, as Christians, have a similar charge in advance of the second coming of Jesus Christ.
