Sermon notes on Luke Chapter 1: 26-38 by David Magowan.

Luke 1:26-38

Doctrine of the virgin birth (conception) lies at the heart of this passage.

Impossibility of the virgin conception
Conception without a human father is humanly impossible - it's a miracle, fulfilling Old Testament prophecy (Isaiah 7:14) - but "nothing is impossible with God" (37). Jesus' unique conception is perfectly consistent with the rest of his unusual earthly life.

Necessity of the virgin conception
o Divine initiative. The virgin conception demonstrates that salvation is of the Lord, and is not the result of human effort or human endeavour.
o Divine nature. The virgin conception provides a Saviour who is both fully-man and fully God. Therefore, Jesus is an authentic (human) and an acceptable (holy) substitute for sinful people.

Significance of the virgin conception
o Proclaims the Immanuel event - when God became man.
o Produces a great and an eternal king (32-33).
o Provides evidence of the coming Spirit-age.
