Sermon notes on Luke Chapter 1: 39-56 by David Magowan.

Luke 1:39-56

In Luke 1, we stand at the dawn of a new era of God's revelation. The coming of Jesus Christ into the world is accompanied by songs of praise. In her song (46-55), Mary expresses her heartfelt desire to magnify the Lord, to rejoice in God her Saviour. Mary is thrilled that God has taken notice of her and so richly blessed her.

Mary really should not be surprised at the undeserved favour God has shown towards her, because God's dealings with her at a personal level are entirely consistent with what God once did for the people of Israel. In vv 51-55 Mary remembers the miraculous events of the Exodus, when God brought down the pride of Egypt and raised up lowly Israel.

All way through Scripture we read of God turning situations upside down and reversing circumstances e.g. Joseph, Gideon, David. Mary worships the God of the impossible, who brings down the proud and lifts up the humble. This was the pattern of Jesus' ministry and his own earthly life - humiliation becoming exaltation. This can be the story of God's working in your life - God is still in the business of choosing lowly people and showing undeserved favour towards them, richly blessing them with the indescribable gift of His Son. Are you singing Mary's song? Has God thrilled your soul?
