Sermon notes on Luke Chapter 1: 57-80 by David Magowan.

When all that Gabriel had said would happen (13), Zechariah's speech returns and, filled with the Holy Spirit, he praises God in song (68-79). Zechariah's song teaches us that

In Jesus Christ, God has come, in fulfilment of His promise, to rescue His people, that they might serve Him all their days.

Visitation
In Jesus, God himself has come to the aid of (literally 'visited' v68) His people. Jesus' deity is hidden in the circumstances of his birth but is seen clearly in his public ministry - miracles and resurrection.

Consummation
God had promised that He would come and save His people. Divine promises were made to David (69) and to Abraham (73). God spoke through the Old Testament prophets e.g. Isa 11, Jer 23.

Salvation
Jesus comes as a Saviour, to rescue His people. He does not bring freedom from Roman oppression but forgiveness of our sins (77). In Jesus, God redeems His people (68) - Jesus paid the price for our sins on the cross (Isa 53).

Obligation
Jesus came that we might serve God without fear in holiness and righteousness (74-75). We are saved to serve. We are to live before him all our days (75). We are to serve the Lord in all of life and for all of life.
